A new 'Meeting Maura' experience (by Ashley Jacoby)

New York April 6th. 2013

I was with some friends doing what we normally did when we hung out together, which was meet as many stars as we could.  Its a hobby of mine and that's where I met some of my friends.  Some of my friends wanted to get Tom Hanks at his show Lucky Guy.  I didn't care so I went along.  I started walking around the theatre (outside of course) and saw the poster for the show.  I noticed I knew some of the stars from other projects that I have seen in movies and television.  I especially noticed Maura Tierney and I went "holy shit I have to meet her".  So I waited with my friends who I later on got separated from for about 3 hours or so.

It wasn't a bad wait especially when you're used to waiting for long periods of time. When the play let out it was chaos. People were lining up all over the place and we were put in these barricades.  I was closest to the street so I got to see the amount of people who came out just to see the cast.  It got so chaotic that the cops had to basically close the street for certain vehicles.  It was just madness but quite entertaining.

Luckily I got to talking with some people near me.  There was this one guy who said he had a crush on Maura Tierney when she was on News Radio.  I of course said I'll try and get you a date.  I had heard previously that Maura was hard to get because she blended into the crowd.  Luckily I had the perfect place to see her.  She literally walked out on the side I was in and when I saw her I started screaming like an idiot.  I didn't care if I was pissing anyone off at that time because all I cared about was meeting Maura Tierney and getting that picture with her.

She finally came over and I kept signing in ASL "you're gorgeous".  Ironically every time I signed it she looked down.  So I kept good to my promise.  I tried to see if I could get the guy next to me a date.  Sadly didn't happen but she got a good laugh out of it.

I said I wanted a picture and we had a 30 second conversation how we wanted the picture.  Either her alone or with me and  I was like girl I want you in the photo with me. So we took and I looked at the photo and I was like oh my god it came out bad.  So I knew I had to retake so I begged her cause I was nervous she might have just walked away but thankfully she was totally cool about it and let me take another.  I may have lost my neck in the photo and we both look like two floating heads, but I don't care and now that picture is my facebook profile picture.  And now I hope to see her again and have the cast of Lucky Guy sign my rubber chicken named Willis.

More quotes

OK Here are some more quotes and conversations:

On Friday when we told her we were coming back the next day to see the play again: I'll mix it up a bit for you.

When Suzze was about to have her picture taken with Maura, Ingrid said: Strike a pose!  LOL

Ingrid brought a dutch magazine 'Glossy' to sign.  That's my old house. Yeah, it's an old magazine from 2007. Yeah, that's old.

I was wearing an orange sweater. She touched my sleeve and kept staring at it: Oh, that's nice. I love that color.

When we gave her the Irish flag, with our message for her on it she said : That's a good idea since this is where You all met. Stephen said that he used the flag on St. Patrick's Day so she shouldn't get to close because it might still have an alcohol smell. Suzze said: so don't smell it. She laughed and said something like: "OK i won't blow my nose in it. She didn't mind that it had been used on St. paddys. We think she just found our gift even more great.

OK I'm off for a holiday now, but I promise I'll upload more pictures when I get back Knipogen

Maura quotes and conversations

These are the quotes and conversations I could remember so far (with some help of my friends). If I remember more, I'll post them later of course. Maura's words are in bold.

I asked her to sign the bunny with the Maura T-shirt I got from my hubby (see pics):
Sure, oh that's so cute, that's so nice of him.

We told her we were coming back on Saturday and asked her if we could take a group pic then, and she said: sure that's fine. And after the pics and signing stuff she went to the bar and said: See you tomorrow!

When it was my turn, I asked her: do you remember me?
Yeah you look familiar!
and then I told her about last year and she made a joke about the New Yorkers : I have to go back to New York where nobody gives you the time of day. They are rude, cranky, mean, not as nice as you are. (She said that with a gleam in her eyes)

She complimented us on our English which was very thoughtful and nice of her.

At the end of the play: we held up the letters that Rike made: M A U R A ♥ and she smiled at us, and she said: Oh god, that's so cute! and we could see her saying to Donna: I had no idea!

When everyone was taking pics: Which camera do we look at? Oh that one, the professionalYou are like paparazzi!Lachen

When I gave her my present: chocolate which looked like Belgian Euros, I said to her, 'I hope you like chocolate' Oh yeah I love it! and money  ...  That cracked her up Lachen (pic)

We all gave her our gifts and the flowers and she thanked us about 100 times, she's very humble: Oh wow, these are beautiful, you're too nice!

When Rachel gave her the program to sign, Maura saw this picture of her laughing: That's me having loads of fun.

In Ingrid's magazine, Maura wrote 'thanks for coming'. Ingrid said to her, no thank YOU for coming to europe!

Kizzy asked Maura if she'd do a play in the West End: Sure, I'd love to!

At some point Tanuki said to Maura: You're so beautiful and You are so stunning: Maura laughed and said Thank you. She looked very happy and took the compliment with ease.

When Tanuki wanted her to sign a picture in which Maura was smoking she said: Oh a cigarette, nasty habit. Tanuki asked if she quit smoking: Yes I did.

I asked her about her plans after this: I would love to do something with the Wooster Group again but it's hard to get in there, they are very selective!

When she was signing Stephen's  ER S15 DVD, she said Wow, Angela looks so beautiful!

When we took a group picture Maura said: we should go round there because its bigger or something like that, and then ran round the corner: Right in front of the coffee stand. Just before the pic was taken she said: There are enough of us to make a footbal team. Some of us screamed: Team Maura! (pic)

When Dianne asked her if she'd ever been to Holland, I asked her if she'd ever been to Belgium. She said: I've never been there before and I told her: well, then you should combine those 2, we're close to each other and we'd love to be your guide: Good idea!

She also said she hadn't been to many places in europe yet, just lots in America.

Stephen mentioned that she should go to Donegal: I have already been there, I love it. So he told her to look him up next time and she laughed: Sure!

After that we told her we were going to 'the church bar' (a bar that was a church once) oh that's good, You can drink and pray at the same time!

When she was taking the flowers and presents: I have to go put these in water and I need a bag for all those presents!

Then I asked her: Are you going back home soon? No no, I'm gonna stay here a little while longer and see some more of Ireland.

One of us said: you must think we're all crazy and apologized for overwhelming her like that. But she didn't seem to mind at all: Oh that's OK!

Later at the bar, Rike went over to Maura and told her she was scared she would never see her again because Maura would be back in New York soon: Well, you should come to New York then. Rike said: if my mom agrees. Maura laughed: Just take her with you!

God of Carnage and meeting Maura

OK, I realise most people are interested in  the 'seeing and meeting Maura' part so I'll restrict to that Knipogen .

So we went to the play twice, on Friday and Saturday (the final performance)

I remember feeling the tension when we were walking to the theatre all together. Everyone was extremely excited.  We were all like ohh and ahh when we climbed the stairs to the entrance and our knees where shaking when we were heading for the very first row of the theatre. We were so close to the stage we could actually drool on it Lachen

The play was really awesome, funny, hilarious even. My English isn't good enough to write a good review but Stephen did write a great recap of it.

I can give you a little bit of extra information though. Mauras famous vomiting scene didn't go quite as planned on Friday and both Donna and Maura really lost it. Maura was lucky she had this bowl, where she was supposed to vomit in, but in stead she could also use it to hide her face when she was laughing. On Saturday, in the bar after the play, I talked to Donna and asked her what went wrong.
Maura had this tube in her sleeve through which the 'vomit' was supposed to project when Donna activated it. But Donna did this a bit too late and the vomit didn't come when it was supposed to and, a few seconds later, when maura didn't expect it anymore, it did come, but she then blocked the tube exit a little bit, so the vomit was sprayed all over her husband.
We all realised something had not gone the way it was planned, and seeing the cast loose it, made it even more fun. We were all laughing hysterically.
And then on Saturday, the vomit did come in time, but then, it actually projected a little bit too well and it even ended up on the other sofa across the table. It wasn't really supposed to go that far.

After the play, our nerves were being tested again, while we were waiting for Maura by the stage door. Everytime, the door openened, we all jumped thinking it was Maura. Finally she did appear and, seeing so many fans at once, took her of guard at first. She didn't expect so many fans waiting for her. We all had a little talk, our pics taken with her, one by one, and she signed lots of stuff: DVD's, pictures, theatre tickets and my Maura bunny I got from my hubby.
She was extremely kind, patient, generous, funny and relaxed. Some of us were a bit more shy than others but she really made us feel at ease. She's such an amazing person.

After that we all went to the bar together, because we definitely needed a drink. She joined the other cast members and we of course had a lot to talk about. It felt so great being in the same bar as Maura Lachen

We all enjoyed this weekend so much because it was a dream come true for everyone. Personally I enjoyed meeting her even more this time, than when I met her in New York last year, as she was more relaxed and herself this time.

Check the album for lots of pics. And check again later, Ill be uploading more but I just can't get it all done in one day!

march 25th

The day started really early for some of us. I had to be at the airport at 8AM.  After breakfast with hubby I went to my gate. Believe it or not, That damn beeper went off again so I got another full body masaage, just like last year Onbeslist

After a smooth flight I landed in Dublin at 11 AM. Ater a little while I managed to find Kizzy & Suzze who were waiting for me at the wrong terminal LOL.

It didn't take us long to find the 747 bus to take us to Dublin Center. We were very happy to hear that our room was already available so we could start unpacking immediately.

After a tasty chicken wrap we first went to the Gate theatre to pick up our tickets for tonight and tomorrow night.
Then we already took a short ride with the hop-on hop off bus and visited St. Patrick's cathedral and then walked back to the hotel.

The others should be arriving any minute now, and then we'll all be getting ready for our fist BIG night.

Keep you posted!

Pics will follow!

Dublin here we come !!!

Today is Maura's birthday so I thought it was the perfect day to start updating this blog again! And with the perfect opportunity!

I bet you already heard the news about Maura doing a play called 'God of Carnage' in Dublin. In fact the previews are starting tonight. The play will run till the end of March! And that's when I'll be there, together with 10 other crazy Maura fans from all over Europe Lachen

I first heard about this on January 9th. when I read this blog. After a few days, when I finally got confirmation about this, I still couldn't believe it: Maura doing a play in Europe Verrast

Ever since then, me and some other fans started making plans immediately.  We couldn't let a chance like this go by!

So, we're gonna be there in the final weekend of March: Hotel is booked, flights are booked, theatre tickets are booked.  Some of us are even going to see the play twice. Told you we were crazy!

All we can do now is count down.  March just can't be here soon enough !

The End

Finally, we're starting to feel human again.  A 5-day trip to New York and one day in London is very exhausting.  But it was so worth it!

B.t.w. did I tell you about the difference between Kizzy's and my suitcase. Kizzy found this extremely funny.  I like to travel light Lachen
I added the pics to the 'Our Room' album if you want to see for yourself.

If you're interested in watching even more pics, I uploaded Kizzy's pics on the web-album and some pics of Paige. Here you can see all pics again.

I also added some stuff in the 'Meeting Maura' post (in red) and more info to the pics.

We also made a lot of video clips, and of course I'm gonna try to make a nice video of them. It will still take a while though, coz I'm going on another holiday in less than 2 weeks.

I'd like to thank everyone who's been following us all the time. It was really great to know everyone was so interested Lachen

If you ever plan on going to New York then don't forget to wave to the webcam Lachen

March 16th. London

Thank God, no more security checks in London Lachen

First we went to St. Pancras Station to drop of our bags at the luggage storage. Then, around noon, we got something to eat because we hadn't even had breakfast yet and we were starving.

Believe it or not, we walked a lot again in London Lachen From Covent Garden to Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Westminster Parliament, London Eye.

The weather was great: sunny and warm, London was crowded with tourists Stoer

Finally we had to get back to St. Pancras Station because I had to catch my Eurostar train at 6.35 PM. It wasn't easy saying goodbye, we were really sad our New York adventure had come to an end. We decided to do this again ... some day Tong uitsteken

Kizzy is addicted to shopping
Martine is addicted to taking pictures

March 15th.

Our last day in New York started with packing our suitcases Wenkbrouw ophalen

On our final day we had to do some more 'present shopping'. I also wanted to find the 'News Radio' building to make some pics of it.

Of course we also had to get our coffee and hot chocolate at 'Starbucks'.

At 7 PM. our shuttle to the airport arrived. Once there, we had to wait quite a long time again, another chance to take some more pictures.

Our plane left right on time and after a 'terrible airplane dinner', it didn't take us long to fall asleep.  We hadn't been up that long when we heard the pilot announcing we started the descent to London Heathrow.

Our last day was about to start.

Kizzy was exhausted
Martine was exhausted

March 14th. Meeting Maura again!

We went to Central Park this morning. Kizzy wanted to find the famous fountain at any cost so we searched for it for about an hour Lachen But meanwhile we had the chance to make some great pictures. We even saw a raccoon and there was also a very hungry squirle that came eating peanuts out of my hand, it was awfully cute.

We got back to the hotel, walking down Fifth Avenue, to get ready to go to the matinee of North atlantic again. We also met Kathy and Paige, 2 friends from 'The Dance We Do' forum. We sat all together in the front row and enjoyed the play. We took a picture of the 4 of us, my camera didn't really want to co-operate but it kinda looks like a special effect and I like it Lachen

Afterwards we all got to meet Maura and had pictures taken and collected autographs again.  She was really nice. She even said she remembered me from last time Tong uitsteken

We all returned home very happy !

Kizzy never empties her plate
Martine always empties her plate

March 13th.

Today was probably the wettest day in our lives. We had decided to go to Ground Zero. It was the first day we took the subway and we managed to get lost again. To cut a long story short, we finally did get there. After the visit to the memorial center, we also had some trouble finding the bus stop so we were getting soaked.

We also wanted to do the Radio City Hall today. Kizzy prefered to get dry first so we decided to split up. She went to the hotel and then went to buy new boots and I went to the 'Radio City Music Hall' coz I had to be there before 3pm. It was very impressive!

Around 4pm. we both got back to the hotel to try and get our clothes and boots to dry.

Thank God there's a restaurant at the hotel so we didn't have to go out to eat. After dinner we watched a Goran Visnjic movie on TV and then off to bed.

Kizzy + rain and wind becomes a completely different Kizzy Tong uitsteken

Meeting Maura

So finally the lady said she was gonna ask Maura to come over. We had to wait in the foyer again. After 5 minutes she came to get us and took us back to the front of the stage, where several other cast members and people were still standing and talking. The lady went to Maura and told her about us. I saw Maura looking in my direction and I started shaking like hell.

She came over to kizzy and me with a questioning look on her face and said
'Hi, I don't believe I know you' .
'No you don't so allow me to introduce us: I'm Martine from Belgium and this is Kizzy from England and we came all the way here to see the play and to meet you.
'Wow, you've come a long way. Too bad the weather is so shitty' and then we shook hands.
'Yeah ... I was wondering if you would be so kind to sign these pictures'.
'Wow, so many? (I had brought 6 pictures)
'Let me explain: Last year on the Tubridy interview in Ireland you remember you mentioned the luby apppreciation society? 'Oh yeah, yeah' Well we are members of that, and as soon as the other fans heard we were coming, some of them asked me to have their pictures signed too. 'Oh, right right'
While I was explaining all that, I was trying to get the picture out of the my bag, but I was so damn nervous, I dropped the pictures and Kizzy picked them back up.

So Maura signed them all very quickly coz she was kinda in a rush. Kizzy didn't even give her own picture to be signed, I think she was a bit embarrased :P

Finally we got our own pics taken by that other lady and I don't know why but I even asked her to take another one. Maura probably thinks I was the most annoying fan she ever met :-[

After we both relaxed a bit, we went out and saw Maura again talking to some other fans. They were mentioning something about her cast last time on 'Three Changes'. They also asked how she was doing now and she said 'I'm hanging in there'.
I'm not sure what's the best way of trying to meet her. The other fans had just been waiting for her outside the door on the 3rd. level.

Anyway, I got what I came for, and will never forget this day :)

Maura & Me YT modified

March 12th.

Today, it started raining but we still had to see 'the Statue of Liberty'. It was a rather short visit, but it was fun taking the pictures Lachen

We got back to the hotel in time so we could get ready for the big evening!

Before the play we had a candlelit dinner at the hotel restaurant: a pizza that we stuffed down our throats as fast as we could ;D

It was only a 5 minute walk to the theater, the weather was getting bad though. All our efforts of the past 2 hours to look good were kinda messed up :P

Anyway, we were the first (7 pm) there so it was worth all the hurying. We got in and had to get to floor 3B to pick up our tickets. Then we went down to floor 3 were we had to wait about half an hour before the doors opened. I don't know about Kizzy but I was starting to get problems in the lower belly :-/

Finally we got in the lobby (7.30 pm). I wanted to find out if there was a possibility to meet the actors afterwards so I went to one of the theater people to find out. My world kinda fell apart when he told me it wasn't the habit in New York.

At 7.45 pm we finally got in the theater, we were in the front row of course. It were the longest 15 minutes in my life before it started :-/

Maura was standing right in front of us, only 2 meters away when we were applauding, wich convinced me even more I had to to do something if I wanted to meet her.

So I went to the stage door and asked one of the assistents if it was possible to meet the actors, more particularly Maura ...
The lady didn't seem to be convinced so I continued like: we're 2 Maura fans, we came all the way from Europe to meet her, bla bla bla...

Finally we got to meet Maura !!! ...

March 11th.

Last night Kizzy slept like a baby, me however, I kept waking up all the time. My biological clock obviously didn't adjust yet. So we got up early and got to do a lot of things.

We checked out Time Square by day and night, we went up to 'the top of the rock' and 'Empire State Building', we saw the NBC studios and visited 'Madame Tussaud' where we had a lot of fun! In between all this, we managed to get lost a few times. Like they say, it takes a real New Yorker to find your way around New York!

Facts about each other:
Kizzy sleeps with her cellphone
Martine is constantly misplacing her stuff

March 10th.

Here's the first big update on our NY adventure, after all it was a very long day. We even set a new record: We've been up for over 24 hours Verstomd

After breakfast with hubby at the Brussel central trainstation, I took the Eurostar to London St. Pancras. Thank God he was right on schedule, I was really scared I would miss Kizzy if the train would be delayed.

So far so good, now all we had to do was find each other. I was very relieved when I saw her standing there, waiting for me Lachen

Next we took the tube to Heathrow. The train was really packed as it was rush hour. I think I annoyed the guy who was standing behind me pretty much. At the first start of the train, I slightly fell against him and I'm afraid I also stepped on his toes a few timesTong uitsteken

About an hour later we arrived at Heathrow. The usual stuff: checking in, checking out the huge airport and then the first safety control where I was so "lucky" to get a first free full body massage by the security officer, who, ufortunately, didn't look Goran Visnjic at all Wenkbrouw ophalen

After a bacon roll and tea we went to our boarding gate 34. Second security control, where I had to take of my boots again and got another free massage. Kizzy had a lot of fun, she had just told me how she hated security control, I wonder why Onbeslist I guess I must really look like a criminal.

Finally we took off. It was a real smooth flight. Unfortunately no Maura-movies available but we saw 'The Blind site', 'This is it' and 'The Good Wife' on our own little private tv screen.

Passport control at JFK took ages but thank God without massages.  We took a shuttle bus to our hotel and we even got a free sightseeing tour at the same time.  We were very glad to get to the hotel though. Our room is very spacious and the beds are really soft.  We realised it was opening night of 'North Atlantic' but we really were too exhausted to do anything anymore.  But we might also go to the play tomorrow. we'll keep you informed Knipogen

Facts we learned about each other today:
Kizzy goes to the bathroom about every hour
Martine looks like a criminal

This is it !

Kizzy and I started counting down the hours now Lachen

Finished packing today, and we've been chatting with the webcam to make sure we recognise each other when I arrive in London, where we'll meet for the first time !

I also hope we have a smooth flight.  Kizzy flew this long before but I never did and I'm terrified of flying Schamen I hope they play some good movie to take my mind of things, maybe one with Maura

If you check the weather forecast, it looks like we might need an umbrella in New York... who cares Lachen

Thanks to everyone who sent us a message to wish us a good trip.  It's really nice to know that so many people are thinking of us.

This is the last update I'll post when I'm still home. Gonna get to bed early now.  See ya !

Counting down

God, It's really coming closer now, 4 more days till the big day and the start of what might become some of the most important days in our lives.

Kizzy and I have been chatting a lot lately.  In fact she just gave me some great news: She'll be taking her dad's laptop !!!
That means we can update our blog day by day, and maybe even upload pictures and stay in contact with the home front, to use 'North Atlantic' terms ! Tong uitsteken

Travel info

OK, so I noticed there are some stowaway-candidates (though I have a real small suitcase) so here's some more travel info. Tong uitsteken

On the 10th.  I'll have to get up very early because I have to catch the first Eurostar train from Brussels to London St. Pancras. Kizzy will be waiting for me there, I hope Knipogen, and then we'll catch the tube to the Heathrow Airport. 3 hours later we should be up in the sky for about 8 hours. Time enough to check our lists of 'to do things'.  I'm considering getting the 'New York City pass'.  Anyone has experience with that?

We should arrive around 3 PM. New York time. Then the transfer to the hotel where I think we might need to take a nap. After dinner, we will probably try to get into the theatre coz it will be opening night of North Atlantic and we already want to try and get a first chance of seeing Maura  or maybe even raise a glass of champaign with her. A girl can dream right ? Tong uitsteken

How it all started

A few weeks ago, hubby gave me green light to go to New York to see Maura Tierney in the play 'North Atlantic'

I didn't feel like going all by myself though, so I tried to find a fellow Maura fan who wanted to go to NY with me.  After a few weeks I found Christabelle,  who is also a member at my favorite lubyforum 'The Dance We Do' and she was very glad she could go.

After deciding we would go from the 10th. till the 15th of March, we started searching for a flight and hotel.  We'll be staying at the Comfort Inn Manhattan which is very close to the theatre and to everything that's worth seeing in NY.

Ever since, we've been preparing a lot: already picked up my brandnew travel passport, the flights are booked, my Eurostar tickets for London are printed, the tickets for 'North Atlantic' will be waiting for us at the theatre on the 12th.

In exactly 3 weeks the New York adventure begins! This is all very exciting and the only disadvantage of it is that I've been sleeping very bad for the past month. Verrast

God I wish it was March 10th. already!
